Humming coming from my brand new M-audio Av40‘s?
So my brand new AV40′s are producing a steady humming. The humming remains at nearly the same sound level no matter the speaker volume until you get to the 3 o’clock position on the knob and the sound increases slightly. The sound is not all that noticeable but at low music volumes or when nothing is playing it is discernible. It is not noticeable at higher volumes but it still bothers me at low volumes. I have them connected to my macbook pro through the cables that came with the speakers. The cable between the two was also supplied with the speakers. However even when all cables are removed the speaker with the amp inside still makes the noise. Is this a result of dirty power, a bad amp, faulty speakers, etc? I’d really like to figure it out, Thanks for answering!!
Its probably a ground loop hum. This is caused when two or more components are plugged into separate AC lines that are out of phase with one another. Most homes have 220 volts coming into your electrical panel, and then it is split 110volts to each side of the panel, Each side is 180 degrees out of phase with the other. When you plug audio components into separate sides of the AC line sharing a common ground you will get this ground loop. You can ether make sure they are on the same AC outlet, or use a ground lifter. This is a 3 prong to 2 prong ground lifter you can get at any hardware store. I have been doing this for years and never heard of anyone “ever” being hurt by a piece of audio gear ungrounded.
The other issues it could be if that is not the issue is if you have a light dimmer on the same circuit, or refrigerator. Also power cords running parallel with Audio cables.
And no power conditioners will not fix this issue and honestly they do not improve sound ether, so save your money.

Or lastly this can also be caused by a bad capacitor in the amplification section of the speakers, but if its in both that is not likely the issue.
